Downstream from the town, Guptar Ghat is held to be where Rama took jal samadhi, entering the Saryu and leaving the world. Small temples stand among old trees along a stretch of stone steps that sees a fraction of the traffic of the central ghats; the Sita-Ram, Chakrahari and Narsingh temples are the best known, and the Charan Paduka Mandir enshrines footprints said to be his.
The ghat lies beside the old Company Garden, now Gupta Ghat Van, and has been renovated with modern facilities. Many visitors bathe in the river here.
It is a short drive from the centre and worth it for the quiet alone. Of everything in Ayodhya this is the place visitors most often say they wish they had allowed longer for.
